How to Become a Lab Technician in India (2026 Guide)

The step-by-step career pathway to becoming a certified Medical Lab Technician in India — courses, exams, salary bands, and where the fastest hiring is happening today.

A Medical Lab Technician (MLT) is the backbone of every diagnostic decision in a hospital. If you are drawn to precision work, high demand and a clear ladder, MLT is one of the most rewarding entry points into Indian healthcare — with salary bands that have risen 34% since 2022.

1. Choose the right course

There are three legitimate pathways after Class 12 (Science stream with Biology):

  • 1Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) — 2 years, offered by state paramedical councils and private polytechnics. Fastest way to earn.
  • 2B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) — 3-year degree from a UGC/AICTE approved institute. Wider career ceiling.
  • 3Certificate courses (6–12 months) — recognised only for specific sub-specialities like phlebotomy or histopathology.

2. Register with a paramedical council

Every state has its own paramedical council. You must be registered before you can legally work in a diagnostic lab. Registration is renewable every 5 years and typically costs ₹1,500–3,000.

3. Choose a specialisation

  • 1Biochemistry — high-volume, automation-heavy, best for pattern recognition minds
  • 2Histopathology — slides, microscopy, cancer diagnostics
  • 3Microbiology — infection panels, antibiotic sensitivity
  • 4Haematology — blood counts, coagulation
  • 5Molecular diagnostics (PCR) — highest paid, post-COVID boom

4. Salary expectations (India, 2026)

  • 1Fresher (0–2 years): ₹18,000 – ₹32,000/month
  • 2Mid-level (3–7 years): ₹35,000 – ₹65,000/month
  • 3Senior / QC lead (8+ years): ₹75,000 – ₹1.4 lakh/month
  • 4Chief technologist (NABL labs): ₹1.5 – ₹3 lakh/month

5. Where the hiring is right now

NABL-accredited chain labs (Dr. Lal PathLabs, SRL Diagnostics, Metropolis, Thyrocare) are hiring aggressively in Tier-2 cities. Multi-specialty hospitals are prioritising molecular diagnostics and cath-lab technologists.

"The technician shortage in Tier-2 India is the single biggest hiring gap we see on Dr.Asia. If you're MLT-certified with 2+ years, you can walk into any of 800+ open roles this week."
